What is Newhaven National Coastwatch Institution (NCI)?
At Newhaven we're part of a national group of volunteers, numbering over 2,500, who work from 59 lookouts (and expanding) around the UK coast to contribute to safety on our inshore waters and along our coastline. NCI is a Declared Facility of HM Coastguard and works closely with them.
How do NCI watchkeepers do that?
By keeping a diligent visual and aural watch, alerting HM Coastguard in case of emergency, monitoring marine radio channels and recording vessel movements within sight of the lookout.
How do new volunteers learn to do that?
Comprehensive training is given, both in the lookout while on watch and in external training sessions. It is not necessary to come from a maritime background.
How much time must I commit?
As much or as little as you want. You can commit to only the number of watches which suit you with a minimum of three a month expected.
What about uniforms?
NCI is a uniformed and ranked organisation. Our Quartermaster can arrange for volunteers to buy NCI uniforms at reasonable prices. Sometimes there are secondhand uniform items for sale.
Are mobility issues a problem?
Our lookout has a steep road approach and about forty steps for access from ground level to the lookout floor. If you have mobility or fitness issues, it may be that our access will not suit you. Please discuss this with our Station Manager if you are uncertain.
