NCI RHOSCOLYN ASSISTS KAYAKER

16/3/22 Recently, the volunteer watchkeepers at the National Coastwatch Institution station at NCI Rhoscolyn monitored a Pan Pan message from HN Coastguard Holyhead regarding a kayaker unable to return to shore. The person was reportedly about 300 metres offshore between Ynys Meibion and Cable Bay.

Duty watchkeeper Paul conducted a visual search and spotted two kayakers about 1 nautical mile Southwest of Ynys Meibon. He immediately contacted HM Coastguard and passed on the details. As a result, the Holyhead Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to Cable Bay and the Trearddur Bay Inshore Lifeboat was launched. The ILB recovered the casualty who was returned safe and sound to Cable Bay, having been using an inflatable kayak. The second kayaker had gone to help and returned to shore under their own paddle power.

As the weather improves and the days get longer, our volunteer watchkeepers will be on the alert as more leisure users take to the water.
