NCI WORMS HEAD START THE DAY WITH A RESCUE

17th September 2022. Last Wednesday, just as the watch at the National Coastwatch Institution at Worms Head was opening at 10am, the watchkeepers received a report of an injured fisherman at the bottom of the cliffs below the lookout station.

A member of the public, who luckily happened to be a GP, was out for a jog and heard the cries of the injured person, who was out of view from the cliff top. The GP came to the lookout to report the incident and spoke to the ambulance service direct. The volunteer watchkeepers reported the incident to HM Coastguard at Milford Haven while the GP and a watchkeeper returned to the casualty to render what assistance they could with ther station first aid kit. Meanwhile, Rhossili Coastguard Cliff Rescue Team had arrived on the scene.

An air evacuation was requested by Milford Haven and Coastguard helicopter Rescue 924 from Newquay was tasked to attend the scene. On arrival Rescue 924 lowered a paramedic who, with the assistance of the Cliff Rescue Team, directed the helicopter to evacuate the casualty to the top of the cliff, before transferring him to a waiting ambulance. It appears that the fisherman, who was partly in the water and suffering a compound fracture, had been there for several hours, but it is believed he will make a full recovery. Well done to Watchkeepers Dave and Tony.
