1st September 2022. Last Sunday, the volunteer watchkeepers of the National Coastwatch Institution station at Swanage observed three kayaks crossing Duriston Bay· As they came to Peveril Race they met a strong ebb tide enhanced by a Force four North Easterly breeze.
One kayak came inshore and beached below Peveril Point while the other two continued to fight the ebb tide but were being swept South. The situation worsened as they came into a large wake, generated by off-shore powerboats racing South, causing both kayaks to capsize.
.The Swanage watchkeepers immediately reported this to HM Solent Coastguard and also advised that there was a yacht near to the incident. The Coastguard contacted the yacht and tasked them to effect rescue while NCI Swanage used VHF Channels 65 and 00 to guide the yacht to the casualty. Swanage Inshore Lifeboat was also tasked to assist and the watchkeepers maintained radio contact with them.
The yacht recovered the two casualties and their kayaks, so the lifeboat diverted to assist the third kayaker on the beach and took them onboard. The lifeboat then attended the yacht and recovered both kayakers and returned to the Lifeboat Station.
