4th April 2022. Our stations, and their volunteer watchkeepers, can sometimes be called upon to assist outside of their normal opening hours.
On Saturday 2nd April, the Station Manager at NCI St Ives received a telephone call from HM Coastguard at Falmouth at about 17:20 regarding a Mayday transmission they had received. They had no vessels name and no location had been given except that they were in the vicinity of St Ives. Falmouth Coastguard had no other information so were enquiring if the watchkeepers had seen anything.
Watchkeeper Peter went and reopened the station at about 17:30 to provide assistance during the search. The St Ives lifeboat was launched and a yacht was found the other side of Clodgy, out of sight of the lookout. The station remained open until the lifeboat had secured a tow and had brought the casualty safely into St Ives. The Coastguard were appreciative of the support given by the NCI St Ives team
