5th May 2022. Being constantly aware of the activities of smaller craft in the water around the area of a station is one of the priorities for our volunteer watchkeepers.

When a Canadian canoe launched within Borthwen Bay, it was noted and logged by the watchkeepers at NCI Rhoscolyn.

After 30 minutes of visual monitoring, the watchkeepers saw that the occupants appeared to be struggling against the tide and were not making any headway at all towards the shoreline. After a further 20 minutes the canoe had reached the inlet below "Roger Dykes" headland. The watchkeepers called HM Coastguard Holyhead to report their concern as the canoe was no longer in view.

A further call to HM Coastguard was made, to advise them that vessel ‘Bad Boyz’ moving closer to the Rhoscolyn Beacon and might be able to assist. Holyhead Coastguard requested that the watchkeepers maintain their visual watch and to advise them of any changes, before they contacted ‘Bad Boyz’ by radio to ask for their assistance.

15 minutes later the NCI Rhoscoyln watchkeepers were able to advise Holyhead Coastguard that they had re-established visual contact with the canoe which was heading back to Borthwen Bay  and the Coastguard then radioed "Bad Boyz" to cancel the incident.

30 minutes later, the canoe arrived back in Borthwen Bay and made its way safely to shore.
