2nd September 2022 When HM Coastguard Falmouth broadcast a Mayday Relay recently, NCI Polruan was already attempting to call them about the casualty at the very same time. The vessel had experienced engine failure after difficulty with its sailing rig and had been blown onto rocks below Lankelly Cliff
When the volunteer watchkeepers made contact with the Coastguard, they advised them that they had observationofn the stricken vessel. The casualty had a VHF marine radio but chose to use a mobile phone to initiate the Mayday. Both the All Weather and Inshore Lifeboats launched and joined the harbour patrol dory on scene at 12:10. HM Coastguard also contacted NCI Polruan requesting details of the scene, weather and sea state and requested that they continued to monitor the situation, before issuing a Mayday update that rescue assets were in attendance.
The AWLB secured the vessel, took the casualty safely aboard and returned to Fowey, while arrangements were made to tow the vessel off on the incoming tide during the late afternoon.
Later that afternoon, the NCI Polruan watchkeeper was able to inform HM Coastguard that a local Boatyard had deployed two workboats and had successfully recovered the yacht and its inflatable tender back to the boatyard. The Coastguard thanked Polruan NCI station for their contribution to the rescue..
