1st November 2022. A wind gust of over 110 mph hit the Isle of Wight overnight as Storm Claudio swept across the south coast. The volunteers of the National Coastwatch Institution station at the Needles recorded the strongest gust of about 96 knots, which is 110.75mph, at around midnight.
A spokesperson from Island Roads said,”It was a very busy night with high winds causing many highway issues particularly in the northern half of the Island. Over 100 calls were made to the hub between 7pm on Monday and 7am Tuesday and we continue to respond to incidents as they come in. “We would like to thank our staff in the hub and also our teams and contractors and emergency services who worked throughout the night in difficult conditions to keep the network safe and open.”
