11th January 2022. On Sunday lunchtime, the volunteer watchkeepers from the National Coastwatch Institution station at Fleetwood spotted two people with two dogs walking out to Kingscar. As they were in danger of being cut off by the incoming tide, the watchkeepers informed HM Coastguard at Holyhead of their concerns, especially as the walkers had started going even further out. In response, Holyhead Coastguard tasked Fleetwood Coastguard Rescue Team to attend the scene.
At this point, the walkers had decided to turn back, making their way directly towards the promenade. And 20 minutes later, both persons and their dogs were safe but very wet after being waist deep in water on the return journey. NCI Fleetwood advised HM Coastguard of this development and they were stood down. Fleetwood CRT arrived on scene and met with the walkers to give them advice.
This was a timely reminder of the importance of checking the tide times when you visit the coast to avoid being cut-off by incoming tides. You can check tide times for your area online or with your local NCI station, who can inform you about the local weather and sea conditions too.
