8th December 2022. The High Sheriff of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Andrew Williams, has selected the National Coastwatch Institution as one of his charities during his tenure and has made a point of visiting every NCI station in the County.
Today he presented awards for outstanding service to the community to several members of NCI at a coffee morning in the picturesque setting of Lanhydrock Memorial Hall. This took place in front of an audience of NCI colleagues including former Chair of the NCI Lesley Suddes, Sector Manager Jim Jefferis and National Board Secretary and Liaison Trustee Jonathan Rothwell representing the Board of Trustees of the charity.
After presenting the High Sheriff’s Certificates, Andrew thanked all of the volunteers of the NCI for their incredible commitment to their work, often standing watch in unpleasant conditions, and commented that for the recipients to be considered outstanding in such company really highlights their service to the community. Andrew also acknowledged that although the NCI had originated in Cornwall, it had now spread nationwide with 58 stations around the coast, but he was also pleased that the NCI has not forgotten its Cornish roots and today there are thirteen NCI stations manned by over 600 volunteers operating around the Cornish coastline 365 days of the year during daylight hours.
Andrew then took the opportunity to chat with many of the members before the coffee and cakes provided by the members – including a lovely NCI cake.
